Reducing waste gives food for thought
According to the latest figures, households in the UK generate 7.3 million tonnes/year of which 4.4 tonnes are avoidable. Overall 15% of edible food and drink purchases are wasted at a cost of £480 per year for an average household.
Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Audrey Wales said she was, therefore, delighted to be able to attend Larne Town Hall for one of four ‘hands-on’ interactive shows as part of the Northern Ireland Science Festival, in this case, targeting food waste.

Hide AdShe said: “The fact that it all took place in such a fun way means that they will remember the lessons all the more clearly and hopefully reduce their own families’ waste output too.”
Team members also quizzed participants on some interesting facts about the amount of food waste throw away each year.
