Grow your own for heart health
The initiative focused on the positive impact of home grown vegetables.

Hide AdLisa Black, a member of the Hearty Lives Carrickfergus new mums’ group said: “I love gardening but I didn’t know how beneficial growing my own fruit and vegetableswould be both in terms of my family’s health as well as our budget.
“It’s also a great way for me to get out and get some exercise.”
Alderman May Beattie, chair of the Council’s Parks and Countryside Sub-committee said: “The
demonstration was a great way to highlight to local people the health and wealth benefits of growing vegetables at home.

Hide Ad“When we started, participants admitted that although they had a keen interest in growing their own, they did not know where to begin. And this was a great way of bringing along plants and herbs for the group to taste as well as gaining a few more handy hints on potting plants such as spearmint, rocket, radish, carrots and much more.
“It was a very educational day and everyone went away enthused by the demonstration.”
Hearty Lives Carrickfergus has high hopes that this will be the start of a long line of home growers and this type of project will help provide information and tips on how to better look after their hearts.
