10 of the best new films coming to UK cinemas this month

February 2020 has got something to satisfy every type of movie-goer, from rom-coms perfect for Valentine's Day, to big-budget blockbusters and Korean Oscar-nominees.

It's a stacked one for film fans, and you'll find something to get excited about in our list.

Birds Of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn

What is it? Birds of Prey - or, to give it it’s full title, Birds of Prey And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn - will follow on from 2016’s bad guy team up film, Suicide Squad.

This time around, rather than joining forces with a bunch of wanted criminals to take on a pair of mystical siblings, Harley will be joining forces with a bunch of vigilantes to take on a local crime boss named Black Mask.

Having left the Joker on read, Harley is a reformed character who is now looking to turn her talents for violence towards more justified ends.

When can I watch it? 7 February

Daniel Isn't Real

What is it? Patrick Schwarzenegger - yes, he does have a famous dad - stars as Daniel, the imaginary friend of troubled college freshman, Luke.

Luke's suffered a violent family trauma, so resurrects his charismatic childhood "friend" to help him cope. But he doesn't realise how dangerous Daniel really is.

Critically acclaimed having premiered in the US last December, Rotten Tomatoes called the horror-thriller "smart, stylish fun".

When can I watch it? 7 February

Parasite

What is it? Bong Joon-Ho's Parasite made history this year, becoming the first Korean film to be nominated for an Oscar.

The black comedy thriller picked up an incredible six nominations, including a Best Picture and Best Director nod.

Drawing comparisons to 2017's satirical horror, Get Out, it was one of the surprise successes of 2019 in the US and now looks set to take the UK by storm.

Plus One

What is it? Rom-coms might not be everyone's cup of tea, but once in a while one comes along that embraces and transcends the clichés of the genre; Plus One is one of those.

In order to survive a summer of wedding fever, longtime single friends, Ben and Alice, agree to be each other's plus one at every wedding they've been invited to.

You can probably tell where this is going, but Plus One has been described by critics as "reinvigorating" and "an entertaining outing elevated by well-matched leads ."

Emma.

What is it? Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Emma, the "handsome, clever and rich" protagonist of Jane Austen's classic novel, in which she meddles in the romantic affairs of her friends and loved ones.

Also on the cast are Johnny Flynn and Bill Nighy, and the period comedy-drama is the directorial debut of Autumn de Wilde, best known for her photography of musicians and her music video work.

She's previously photographed CD covers for acts like Elliott Smith, The Raconteurs, The White Stripes, Beck, Built to Spill, Wilco, and New Found Glory, so you know Emma's going to look great.

When can I watch it? 14 February

The Call Of The Wild

What is it? This live action/CGI crossover film is based on Jack London's 1903 novel of the same name.

It follows a domesticated dog named Buck who is stolen from his Santa Clara home and sold to freight haulers in the Yukon.

Harrison Ford stars as the stern John Thornton, who slowly develops a friendship with the dog, while Scotland's Karen Gillan lends her voice as the wolf Mercedes.

When can I watch it? 19 February

Midnight Family

What is it? This documentary follows the Ochoa family, who run a private ambulance service in Mexico City's wealthiest neighbourhoods, competing with other for-profit EMTs for patients in need of urgent help.

The film debuted at last year's Sundance Film Festival, and has racked up an impressive 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, who call it "an enthralling and disquieting glimpse of healthcare in modern Mexico."
