Hood set for New Zealand adventure
The Whitehead teenager told the Times: “One of the overseas players at Carrick, Michael Taiaroa, is from Hawkes Bay and lives near the academy. He knows Brendon Bracewell, who is a former New Zealand international, and recommended me to him. I was fortunate enough to get the final place in this year’s intake and I am really looking forward to the challenge.”
Having just completed his A-levels at Carrick Grammar, Richard was offered a place at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown to study accountancy, however, he has decided to put those plans on hold for a year.

“While I am there, I’ll play cricket for the academy and may have an opportunity to play for a local club. I also hope to do some coaching in several local schools and clubs.”
“Brendon has great experience. He has coached his son Doug for many years. He has now become a regular in the New Zealand squad, so I really feel that this is a fantastic opportunity and one that I can learn a great amount from.”
Richard added: “I would also like to thank Carrickfergus Cricket Club and its main sponsor, The Stove Yard, who have been very supportive.”
